PDP crisis: Group insists Anyanwu remains National Secretary

Published

on

A group of stakeholders in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted that Sen. Samuel Anyanwu remains the authentic National Secretary of the party, in line with the party constitution and other existing laws of the land.

The stakeholders, under the aggies of Concerned PDP League (CPDPL), stated this at a news conference by its Leader, Daboikiabo Warmate, on Friday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the news conference was sequel to the controversy surrounding the rightful occupier of the office of the PDP national secretary.

Warmate commended the disposition of the party’s acting National Chairman and Anyanwu on the mature manner in which they had handled the affairs of the party at these trying times.

He, however, expressed disappointment with the position of the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba; the National Legal Adviser, Kamarudin Ajibade and a federal lawmaker, Ikenga Ugochinyere, on the leadership crisis.

He also faulted the positions of the PDP Governors’ Forum and the Sen. Adolphus Wabara-led PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) advising the National Working Committee (NWC) to recognise Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the national secretary.

He said that the BoT’s advice disregarded the party’s constitution, adding that the tenure of some of its members had also expired.

He insisted that section 47 (5) of the party’s constitution, as amended in 2017, never compelled Anyanwu to resign his position as the national secretary while contesting the Imo governorship election.

Warmate added that there was no basis for Anyanwu to have resigned since he did not win the election nor sworn in as governor of the state.

He also clarified that Anyanwu never tendered any letter of resignation from his position as PDP national secretary while contesting the PDP governorship primary, which he won.

Warmate said that having emerged as the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Imo, Anyanwu only took his annual leave between April 18 and May 24, 2023 to enable him to concentrate on ensuring victory at the governorship election.

He explained that a letter was sent to INEC to notify it and that the deputy national secretary would act during the period.

He, however, said that due to inordinate interest, pressure was mounted on Anyanwu to resign, which he politely refused, in consonance with section 47(5) of the PDP constitution, as amended in 2017.

Warmate claimed that an Enugu High Court and the Appeal Court, Enugu Division, were misled in their judgements recognising Udeh-Okoye as the party’s national secretary.

He added that Anyanwu had already approached the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, where he secured an order restraining the implementation of the court judgments.

“The national secretary, Anyanwu, as a law-abiding leader of our great party swiftly, on Jan. 13, 2025, applied for a stay of execution of the judgment at the same Appeal Court in Abuja and it was granted.

“The stay of execution of the judgment was granted by no less a judge than the President of the court of appeal, and she enjoined all parties to maintain status quo ‘ante bellum’, pending the hearing and the determination of the motion on notice.

“In addition to that, he had already filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against the judgment too,” he said.

Warmate, however, advised Udeh-Okoye and his group to wait for the decision of the Supreme Court.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP has been involved in a protracted crisis due to claims by both Anyanwu and Udeh-Okoye on the position of the party national secretary.

The PDP Governors’ Forum and the party’s BoT had earlier called on NEC to implement the court ruling recognising Udeh-Okoye as national secretary.

Ologunagba, in a statement on Monday, had said that after due consideration, the NWC overwhelmingly recognised and confirmed Udeh-Okoye as the substantive national secretary of the PDP.

Meanwhile, Anyanwu insisted that the NWC had not met to discuss the matter, claiming it was only deliberated upon via a WhatsApp platform, and that the issue still remained in court. (NAN)

Why I dumped PDP for APC – AMAC chairman

Published

on

Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Mr Christopher Maikalangu, has said his decision to leave the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APAC) is to secure greater opportunities for his people.

Maikalangu made this known in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Kingsley Madaki.

According to him, the council has been losing out on federal appointments and employment opportunities due to political misalignment.

He stressed that his move to decamp to the APC was aimed at ensuring that the people of AMAC benefitted from the dividends of governance.

“The position we took is for the good of democracy and to ensure that the good people of AMAC move forward

“The decision is rooted in the collective interest of the constituents. I was not elected to lead the entire Nigerians, but the AMAC residents.

“I looked at the interests of my people and I have seen that these interests cannot be protected in any other platform,’’ he said.

The AMAC Chairman expressed the confidence that the APC will provide a more promising platform to advance the welfare of his people.

He stressed that his defection was a calculated step towards sustainable development and inclusive governance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Maikalangu, who contested on the platform of PDP, was declared winner of AMAC council election held in 2022.

He polled a total of 19,302 votes to defeat his closest rival Murtala Karshi of the APC. (NAN)

PDP Governors Decline Coalition with Other Parties

Published

on

Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have firmly stated that they will not pursue a merger or coalition with any other political party in the lead-up to the 2027 general election.

This decision was conveyed in a communiqué released on Monday following their meeting in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

As discussions about the potential formation of a coalition to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, opposition politicians have been engaging in “strategic meetings” on this matter.

A prominent proponent of this coalition is Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. Abubakar has been a vocal advocate for uniting opposition parties to displace the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu.

The communiqué stated, “In light of the widespread speculation regarding potential mergers of political parties, groups, and associations, the Forum has resolved that the PDP will not enter into any coalition or merger.”

Nonetheless, the governors expressed that the PDP is open to welcoming any parties, individuals, or groups interested in joining them to reclaim power from the APC in 2027.

The governors also voiced their support for Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, affirming their ongoing backing for him.

Additionally, the PDP leaders condemned the current state of insecurity in the country, labeling it as “alarming.” They called for a reassessment and restructuring of priorities and strategies, advocating for a bottom-up approach that empowers sub-national entities to serve as a robust defense against security threats.

Governors attending the meeting included Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Peter Mbah (Enugu). The governors of Akwa Ibom and Delta were represented by their deputies, Akon Eyakenyi and Monday Onyeme, respectively.

Osun 2026: Oyetola, PDP Rep Wole Oke to run on APC joint ticket

Published

on

A former Governor of Osun State and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola has struck a deal for a joint ticket

with a member of the House of Representatives representing Obokun/Oriade constituency, Wole Oke to contest the 2026 governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), authoritative sources have said.

Political observers said the ambition of Oke to be Deputy Governor under the platform of the APC and the ongoing romance between them must have been the reasons for the serial attacks on Governor Ademola Adeleke by the legislator.

The concluded plan by the Minister to settle for Wole Oke as his running mate for the 2026 Osun governorship election on APC platform, was said to have received the blessing and endorsement of the party leadership in the state.

As part of his efforts to revive his political fortunes in Osun State, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola has reportedly concluded arrangement with Hon. Wole Oke, who is currently in PDP, to fly the ticket of the APC for 2026.

This move, according to multiple sources will galvanize support from Osun East and destabilize the ruling PDP in the State.

Despite strong concerns of contempt amongst the Osun APC leaders and stakeholders favouring the Osun West Senatorial District, one of the core issues in the build up to 2018 and 2022 election, Oyetola has seemingly been to lure Oke into the APC with a joint ticket in 2026.

A source said, “Oke’s continuous open rebuke of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration in Osun State has been traced to a ground plan to betray the Governor and divide the PDP to create an opportunity for the APC to launch a possible comeback to Bola Ige House.

“Oke has visited Oyetola more than 10 times since this year in several locations in Lagos, Abuja and outside Nigeria with a promise to ensure that Adeleke is sacked from office in 2026.

“Convinced that he will not secure an automatic ticket for 2027, for the seventh (7th) consecutive election, he has resorted to sabotaging the chances of the PDP and Governor Adeleke in 2027, and has made two demands from the APC, a joint ticket with Oyetola or a Senate ticket, having realized that the Oriade/Obokun federal constituency stakeholders and electorates will not return him again to the Green Chamber, for the sixth (6th) term.

“Hon. Wole Oke wants to contest for Osun Governor in 2030 and he does not want to be politically irrelevant between 2027 and 2030. He has lost the backing of all political stakeholders in his federal constituency to contest again in 2027. They have told him this is his last opportunity and that is why he is fighting everyone. His relationship with APC is just for one thing; political relevance”.

But after assessing the dangers of working against Senator Fadahunsi in Osun East Senatorial District, Oke has settled for a Deputy Governorship ticket with Oyetola.

This was agreed during a high-powered meeting that took place in Abuja, in the middle of 2024. At the meeting, Oke boasted of having control of about 80% of all political leaders in Ijesha zone, including several members of Osun State House of Assembly and can influence their movement into the APC anytime.

However, sources within the State APC have confirmed strong opposition to this development as many stakeholders have rejected the idea of the party ignoring the Osun West Senatorial District again, given that the current Governor is from the District after several years of neglect of the District, particularly by the APC.

A source said, “As we speak, a former Governor and national leader of the APC has rejected the proposal and insisted that Wole Oke’s political influence is exaggerated. Dindings from the ruling party have shown that all political leaders from Obokun/Oriade and the Ijesha Zone have deserted the lawmaker in his attempt to destabilize the ruling PDP and as such cannot deliver sufficient support from the zone.

“Many APC leaders are furious with this possibility. They know they cannot trust Wole Oke, they have asked him how many Commissioners, Special Advisers and Assembly members from the ruling PDP
he is coming with. But he has yet to give them any name. They believe he just wants to use them.”
