The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to reinstated Governor Siminalayi Fubara to remain committed to the party following recent political turmoil.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers due to ongoing political unrest stemming from a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This conflict has led to significant governance paralysis within the state.

In response to the crisis, President Tinubu suspended Governor Fubara and the state lawmakers for a six-month period, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the sole administrator. However, on Wednesday, the president announced the conclusion of the emergency rule, allowing all elected officials to resume their duties effective Thursday.

Hakeem Olalemi, the PDP vice-chairman for Lagos Central, has encouraged Governor Fubara to lead with courage and not succumb to fear. “The governor should not be intimidated; the situation has already unfolded. He must remain steadfast in fulfilling his responsibilities as the leader of Rivers. Fubara is tasked with revitalizing the state,” Olalemi stated.

He further urged the governor to cultivate the party that propelled him to office, enhancing its strength both locally and regionally. “He should not abandon the PDP but instead ensure it grows robust in Rivers,” Olalemi emphasized.

Additionally, Olalemi called on all political figures in Rivers to prioritize the welfare of the citizens and foster an environment of peace and cooperation. “There is no reason for excessive celebrations regarding Governor Fubara’s reinstatement; he has regained the mandate that was freely given but is now in a weakened position,” he remarked.

He stressed the importance of collaboration between the legislative and executive branches for the benefit of Rivers’ residents, reiterating that the electorate’s interests should take precedence over political maneuvering. “The people deserve to enjoy the benefits of democracy; they should be able to reap the rewards of their choices,” he added.

Olalemi also advised lawmakers who had previously pledged allegiance to the All Progressives Congress during the crisis to return to the PDP. “I urge the 27 lawmakers who initially aligned with the APC to reconsider their position and reintegrate into the PDP to help advance the party’s agenda,” he concluded.

Following the lifting of the emergency rule, Governor Fubara, along with his deputy Ngozi Odu and members of the state assembly, returned to their offices on Thursday.
