Former Chelsea defender Tom Boyd has praised Kelechi Iheanacho for his debut goal for Celtic against Kilmarnock on Sunday, and he believes the Super Eagles striker could be the shining light for the Hoops this season, Soccernet.ng reports.

Iheanacho just completed his transfer to Celtic two weeks ago, and he was handed his debut immediately in the club’s Premiership game against Kilmarnock last week.

The Super Eagles striker got off the bench to score a last-minute penalty for the Hoops to land them a 2-1 win at Rugby Park.

Following his goal, Iheanacho has drawn plaudits from his teammates and even Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers, who knows him very well from their days together at Leicester City.

Celtic Legend Praises Kelechi Iheanacho

The latest to shower encomiums on Iheanacho is former Chelsea defender Boyd, who is also a legend at Celtic Park after making over 300 appearance between 1992 to 2003.

The 59-year-old is hoping that Iheanacho’s last-minute winner will spur an uptrend in the Hoops’ performances this season.

“For Iheanacho to step up on his debut and take a penalty to win the game in the last minute says a lot about his character,” Boyd said, per stv.tv.

“In previous games our penalties haven’t been too great, so hopefully it can be a light to spread through the club at this moment in time.”

Although Celtic sit at the summit of the Scottish Premiership, they have not been convincing enough. The Hoops have had to labour to get wins in most of their games and have struggled to score goals.

Meanwhile, Iheanacho, who is struggling to revive his career, will hope to continue his goalscoring form and lead the Hoops to success.
