The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned political parties to resolve internal crises and strictly adhere to the legal and regulatory framework guiding their activities, particularly the provisions enforced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He gave this advise in his monthly media chat on developments within the Polity and the Federal Capital Territory in his Abuja residence.

Wike stressed that many of the challenges facing political parties stem from failure to follow due process, warning that internal disputes cannot override established laws governing party operations and conventions.

He referenced past legal battles within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that the Supreme Court made it clear that violations of the law cannot be justified under the guise of internal party affairs. According to him, issues such as the conduct of congresses and eligibility to participate in conventions must comply fully with legal requirements.

The minister explained that in one instance, the court ruled that certain party actions were invalid because due process was not followed, including the participation of unauthorised delegates and the failure of some states to conduct proper congresses.

Wike also addressed ongoing disputes in other politicaparties, criticising attempts to drag INEC into internal disagreements.

Wike maintained that political parties must take responsibility for putting their internal structures in order, warning that failure to do so could undermine their electoral prospects.

He emphasised that adherence to the rule of law, internal cohesion, and respect for institutional processes are essential for any party seeking credibility and success in Nigeria’s democratic system.
