Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has assured residents that the ongoing Benin-Sapele road project, constructed with concrete pavement, will serve the state for at least 80 years before requiring major maintenance.

The governor gave the assurance on Thursday shortly after inspecting the 10-kilometre road in Benin City, the state capital.

“You can see the concrete pavement all the way. This is serious, expensive work,” Okpebholo said. “It is a quality job that will last for at least 80 years before we even need to think about major maintenance.”

The governor commended President Bola Tinubu for providing the funds, noting that the administration’s commitment to timely project delivery nationwide had spurred development across Edo.

“It’s a quality job, and everything is going on well. There is nothing else to say but to thank President Bola Tinubu for providing the funds. The reason we see this level of development in Edo currently is because President Tinubu is not sleeping,” he added.

Residents along the axis trooped out to welcome the governor, showering him with praise for the transformative project.

Pat Ogie, a resident, said the construction had alleviated the suffering of road users. “There used to be heavy gridlock on this road, but the Okpebholo administration has now made it a thing of the past. God will bless our governor for us,” she said.

Another resident, Justina Osaghae, described the road’s quality as highly commendable, adding that the people were full of praise for the governor.

Site engineer Femi Fatola disclosed that 4.5 kilometres of the 10-kilometre stretch had already been cast, with work progressing steadily.
