The Convener of the Ofada City Tour, Chef Fapohunda Matilda, has warned that Nigeria is losing cultural and economic value by neglecting its indigenous dishes, especially Ofada rice.

Speaking during the Ofada Renaissance Experience in Abuja over the weekend, Fapohunda said the country risks allowing foreign cultures to dominate its food identity if Nigerians fail to appreciate and promote local cuisines.

According to her, Ofada rice possesses unique nutritional, cultural and economic benefits that many citizens still do not recognise.

“What inspired the Ofada Renaissance Experience was my love for Ofada rice itself,” she said.

“Ofada rice deserves to be in the spotlight, not just as a side piece on the menu. It should be at the centre because it is healthier and richer than many imported rice varieties.”

Fapohunda lamented that although Ofada rice is widely produced in Ogun State and other parts of the country, its value remains underrated at home, even as foreigners increasingly appreciate and commercialise African delicacies.

“If we don’t appreciate what we have, people from outside will tap from it and turn it into something bigger,” she said. “I am pushing Ofada rice to the highest level and putting it on the global map like never before.”

Also speaking at the event, the Founder of Smokeyhut Delights, Damilola Esther Alabi, urged the Federal Government to intensify awareness around local foods due to their health benefits, particularly for diabetic patients.

She emphasised that Ofada rice is not only cultural but medicinal, noting that its consumption is often recommended for those managing diabetes.

Alabi added that promoting indigenous foods would strengthen unity, preserve culture and reduce Nigeria’s over-dependence on imported foods.

“We need to promote our local dishes. By doing so, we are also educating the Gen Z generation to appreciate and embrace our cultural foods,” she said.

The Ofada Renaissance Experience attracted chefs, cultural enthusiasts and food lovers who are working to preserve Nigeria’s culinary heritage and promote healthy local alternatives.
