A non governmental organization, center for Peoples Health, PeaceĀ and Progress (3Ps) Wednesday donated hygiene and health related items to 106 house holds comprising 397 displaced children in Shuni, Denge Shuni local government area, Sokoto state.
The donation which consists of WASH items (water, Sanitation and Health) were received with gratitude by the visibly depressed displaced persons.
Beneficiaries are those displaced from Doma, Rafin Gero,Tsamiya, Lofa Dabegi, Jurga, Dakku, Damri and Kuruwa villages in Tureta local government area of Sokoto state.
Tureta, is about an hour drive from Sokoto metropolis and shares boundary with Zamfara that is considered as one of the epicenters of terrorists actacks in the North Western States.
Addressing beneficiaries, the Executive Coordinator of 3Ps, Cecilia Iseme
said they are in Shuni, to donate items as part of an emergency assistance to women and children whom bandits have displaced from their respective villages on Tureta local government and now taking refuge in Shuni.
“When we came, we discovered that most of the children were malnourished. Some of the households were down with malaria and fever. We took some of them to the hospital and they were admitted. MSF helped us a lot in the hospital.
“After looking at their health conditions, we also felt their is the need to give them tips on how to protect themselves against Gender Based Violence (GBV) considering the fact that they are displaced and vulnerable.
“We lectured them on how to protect themselves against being abused sexually, morally, psychologically, and otherwise. And now we have come and donated materials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, cups jaricacans, bockets, bathing soaps, detergents and kettles as well as sanitary materials”
Madam Cecilia who admitted that the state government and donor agancies are trying their best, however appealed to wealthy individuals and religious bodies to also come to the aid of IDPs in the state, adding they are now in need of food donation.
Present at the event were the Marafan Shuni, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the Ardon Shuni, Alhaji Muhammadu Jani Harande repressed by his
secretary, Aminu Abdullahi and a resident of Shuni, Alhaji Mai’akwai Abubakar (Shetiman Shuni) whose house over 150 of the IDPs resides.
