The South-East chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Federal Capital Territory has set an ambitious target of securing one million votes for the party’s presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a solidarity visit to the party’s National Vice Chairman for the South-East, Mr Teddy Obey, the FCT South-East NDC Chairman, Mr Mike Nwosu, declared that the region would mobilise intensively to deliver overwhelming support for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Mr Nwosu, who led members from all six area councils of the FCT on the visit, said the delegation aimed to express gratitude to the national leadership for affording the South-East the opportunity to produce the party’s presidential flagbearer.

“We are going to bring together no fewer than one million people in Abuja. We want to unite all Igbos in the FCT under the NDC umbrella,” he stated, adding that the group would commence grassroots mobilisation immediately to secure massive support across the territory.

He described Obi’s emergence as a watershed moment for political inclusion in the South-East, stressing that the region had long agitated for a greater stake in national leadership and must now seize this historic opportunity.

The Chief Technical Adviser to the NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, Mr VinMartin Ilo, said the South-East bore a critical responsibility to assure Nigerians across the country that an Igbo presidency would serve the collective national interest.

“The Igbos know that to achieve this task, they must lead from the front and reassure other Nigerians that an Igbo president will deliver the change this country urgently needs,” Mr Ilo remarked.

He emphasised that the NDC’s campaign strategy would be comprehensive, reaching Nigerians at all levels, including remote communities, and would rely on facts, statistics and evidence to demonstrate Obi’s suitability for the presidency.

“We are leaving no Nigerian and no part of Nigeria out of this campaign,” Mr Ilo affirmed.

In his remarks, Mr Teddy Obey disclosed that the NDC would adopt a peaceful, door-to-door mobilisation strategy, avoiding violence, confrontation or unnecessary street activities.

“Our approach is house-to-house engagement—no noise, no fighting,” he said, adding that the party had drawn lessons from past experiences and would leverage grassroots channels to sustain political momentum.

Mr Obey urged Nigerians to consider the long-term future of their children and grandchildren when making electoral decisions, rather than being swayed by immediate personal gain.

While acknowledging the reality of financial inducements during elections, he counselled voters to let their conscience guide their choices.

“If anyone comes to entice you with anything, it is your right to accept it as your property. But do not let it influence your conscience—vote according to what you believe is right for the country,” he advised.

The NDC chieftain reiterated the party’s commitment to encouraging active democratic participation and achieving political change through peaceful, constitutional means, with the ultimate goal of building a system that serves present and future generations.
