NCC Spotlights Broadband, AI Governance, and Child Online Safety at WTDC-25

Nigeria joined over 160 member states to participate at the just-concluded World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25), c conference convened to shape the future of global digital development.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), part of Nigeria’s official delegation, says its participation helped influence key decisions on broadband expansion, online safety, and consumer protection.

In a statement posted on its official social media channels, the Commission said it joined other ITU member states in negotiating “global resolutions and policies on broadband deployment in unserved and underserved areas,” as well as advancing gender inclusion in ICT and addressing risks associated with new technologies such as AI.

The NCC noted that the conference—captured in a 484-page provisional report—also expanded the scope of child online protection within the ITU Development sector “from just telecommunications services to now incorporate online services and applications,” marking a significant shift in international digital-safety standards.

A major highlight for Nigeria at WTDC-25 was the leadership role played by NCC’s Mrs. Stella Erebor, who chaired the Working Group of the Plenary. According to the Commission, she “successfully guided diverse national positions towards unified global outcomes on key telecommunication policy issues,” a role that placed Nigeria at the centre of critical negotiations shaping global connectivity and regulatory frameworks.

The NCC also celebrated the election of another staff member, Hadiza Kachallah, as Vice-Chairman of the ITU Development Sector Study Group 1. “The Board, Management, and Staff wish her a successful and impactful tenure,” the Commission said, describing the appointment as a recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in international telecom policy circles.

With WTDC-25 now concluded, the NCC says Nigeria remains committed to global partnerships aimed at improving digital access, strengthening consumer protection, and ensuring that emerging technologies contribute to inclusive development.
