The Federal Government’s commitment to advancing education received a boost on Friday with the launch of FortLugard University in Apo, Federal Capital Territory.

The foundation stones for the Senate Building and Faculty of Computer Sciences were laid at the university’s permanent site.

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghe, laid the Senate Building’s foundation, while the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Honourable Zephaniah Bitrus Jisalo, laid the stone for the Faculty of Computer Sciences.

Justice Onnoghe praised the founder and Chancellor, Elder Ogwu James Onoja, SAN, for his foresight. “A country without well-educated, vibrant youths is doomed,” he said.

Minister Jisalo thanked Onoja for establishing the university in the FCT, noting its potential to create jobs and expand youth access to quality education. He appealed to the host community to “jealously guide and protect the university and its staff.”

Onoja described the event as “a convergence of vision, faith, and purpose,” adding that it marks a step toward creating a world-class university in Nigeria and Africa.

He outlined the university’s vision: “FortLugard University is designed to be an intellectual powerhouse, producing graduates with character, competence, and creativity to positively influence society.”

The Chancellor said the Senate Building, which will bear Justice Onnoghe’s name, will be the hub of academic governance, ensuring integrity and quality.

“The Faculty of Computer Sciences represents the future,” Onoja said. “It will focus on AI, data science, cybersecurity, software engineering, and digital innovation, equipping young minds to compete globally.”

Onoja added that the university is more than a collection of buildings. “We are constructing destinies. Today, we plant seeds that will grow into a forest of possibilities,” he said.

He urged continued support from government, private sector, philanthropists, and development partners to achieve a world-class standard. “FortLugard University is rising strong, bold, and will stand as a legacy for generations,” he assured.

The ceremony also highlighted progress on other university projects, including the Ukala School of Engineering and Technology, with its foundation stone recently laid by Emmanuel Ukala, SAN.

FortLugard University aims to be a centre of academic excellence, moral integrity, technological innovation, and global competitiveness, according to the founder.
