The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the News Agency of Nigeria, Ali M. Ali, has described a new book examining the digital transformation of Nigeria’s newspaper industry as a comprehensive account of changes shaping the media sector.
Ali made the assessment in a statement on Tuesday ahead of the launch of The Digital Shift in Nigeria’s Newspaper Industry, authored by LEADERSHIP Newspaper’s Group News Editor, Sunday Isuwa.
The book is scheduled for launch on October 29, 2026, at the Conference Hall of the National Open University of Nigeria headquarters, Jabi, Abuja.
Ali said the publication traced the development of Nigerian newspapers from their colonial origins to the disruption caused by digital technology.
He said the book examined how newsrooms had adapted to technological advancement while restructuring their business models and exploring new revenue sources.
The NAN boss noted that the changes were occurring as more Nigerians increasingly accessed news through mobile devices and other digital platforms.
“It considers the ethical and professional challenges faced by journalists today, highlighting the delicate balance between immediacy and accuracy, as well as the complexities of freedom of expression under regulatory pressures,” Ali said.
He said the book also examined Nigeria’s media transformation from a global perspective through comparative analysis and case studies of selected newspapers.
According to him, the publication highlights the resilience and innovation of media organisations navigating the rapidly changing industry.
Ali said the book also looked ahead to the future of newspaper publishing in a digital Nigeria.
He added that it contained recommendations for editors, journalists, policymakers and other stakeholders seeking to build a sustainable and ethically grounded media industry.
The NAN chief described the publication as a useful resource for media professionals, academics and others interested in the evolution of journalism.
He urged journalists, policymakers, academics and other stakeholders to attend the launch.
Ali said the event would provide an opportunity to celebrate the publication and discuss the future of journalism in Nigeria.
Isuwa, the author, said the book examined how technological advancement was reshaping newsroom operations, journalism practice, business models and audience engagement in the country.
The launch will hold at 10am at the NOUN headquarters, behind the EFCC Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja.
