Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has revealed that Rodri’s indecision scuppered the club’s pursuit of the midfielder, clearing the path for Barcelona to clinch his signature.
The Spain international was high on Madrid’s wishlist this summer before ultimately joining their fiercest rivals from Manchester City in a deal worth an initial €60 million.
Mourinho confirmed that the Bernabéu outfit tabled a compelling proposal and that he personally held multiple conversations with the 30-year-old during the negotiation process.
“I spoke to him a couple of times, and Real Madrid made him a very good offer,” Mourinho told El Chiringuito.
However, the Portuguese tactician admitted that Rodri’s failure to commit proved decisive.
“Rodri had doubts. He hesitated, and his hesitation created doubts for me,” Mourinho explained. “He is an extraordinary player and was very respectful towards us. I have nothing negative to say.”
The revelation casts fresh light on how Barcelona outmanoeuvred their arch-rivals for one of the summer’s marquee transfers.
Rodri, who was unveiled by the Blaugrana on Tuesday, confirmed that the Camp Nou had always been his preferred destination despite receiving alternative offers. He cited the club’s footballing philosophy and sporting vision as pivotal factors in his decision.
The former City stalwart has signed a contract running until 2030, with additional performance-related clauses potentially inflating the overall value of the deal.
