Two suspects arrested as police confirm motorcycle belonged to victim.
Police in Benue State have arrested two members of a mob that beat a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member to death over baseless accusations of motorcycle theft.
The victim, Mr Benjamin Msughaondo, was killed at Major settlement, near the Buruku Local Government Secretariat, in the early hours of Sunday.
Benue Police Command spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, confirmed the arrest on Friday in Makurdi. She said the mob acted without any investigation.
“He was wrongly accused of stealing a motorcycle, and without verifying the claim, he was mobbed to death,” Udeme stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed the accusation was false. Documents found on the deceased reportedly proved he was the rightful owner of the motorcycle.
Police said two suspects are now in custody, while at least one other remains at large. Efforts are ongoing to track down fleeing members of the mob.
Udeme assured the public that a thorough investigation would be carried out, and all those involved would face justice.
