Lionel Messi delivered another masterful performance, netting twice to guide Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Austria in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Group J encounter, securing their passage to the knockout rounds.
The Argentine captain broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, calmly converting a clever pass from Facundo Medina to beat goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. The strike came after Messi had earlier seen a penalty saved, demonstrating his characteristic resilience in responding to adversity.
Austria proved stubborn opponents, with Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch both testing Argentina’s resolve. However, Emiliano Martínez and the South American defence stood firm, frustrating the European side throughout the contest.
Messi sealed the result deep into stoppage time, reacting quickest to a rebound after his initial attempt was blocked, rifling home his second in the 95th minute.
The victory reinforces Argentina’s credentials as serious title contenders, with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continuing to prove invaluable despite entering the twilight of his storied career. Lionel Scaloni’s side now progress with momentum as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
