Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has pledged that the country will continue to champion regional cooperation as Africa works towards peace and security.

Speaking in Abuja at a gala night for participants of the African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit 2025, the minister said unity and collaboration remained the continent’s strongest tools against insecurity.

In a statement signed by his assistance on Media Ahmad Dan-Wudil on Thursday said “Tonight, we are not gathered for war, but for celebration,” Matawalle told military chiefs.

“We are here to reflect on how far we have come, honour sacrifices made for peace, and remind ourselves of the work ahead in building a safer Africa.”

The event, held between 25 and 27 August, brought together defence chiefs from across the continent. Delegates discussed border security, counter-terrorism, maritime safety, and the use of emerging technologies in military operations.

Matawalle commended the visiting commanders for what he described as their tireless efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and regional stability. He said their presence in Nigeria reflected the enduring bonds among African states.

“Together, we can build an Africa where every citizen lives in safety and dignity,” the minister added, urging military leaders to embrace cooperation and uphold values of democracy, fairness, and respect for human rights.

The summit also examined ways to deepen civil-military cooperation, especially in defence procurement and logistics. Participants stressed the importance of regional partnerships to secure Africa’s vast waterways.

Matawalle raised a toast to the hope of a peaceful continent, calling on the defence chiefs to sustain the spirit of friendship forged at the summit. “May the teamwork we have shared here bring results beyond this room,” he said.
