Presiding over a crucial plenary session, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa spearheaded the call for urgent legislative reforms to address the prevailing security challenges.

Demand for Constitutional Amendment: Speaker Obasa, addressing the Assembly under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance,’ reiterated the pressing need for constitutional revisions to authorize the formation of state police units.

Citing a recent abduction incident involving a commercial bus in Ikorodu, Lagos, Obasa stressed the urgency of the matter and implored the National Assembly to expedite the amendment process.

The Assembly advocates for the augmentation of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps to bolster the security apparatus in Lagos State.

Recognizing the strain on existing security mechanisms, the Assembly underscores the necessity for enhanced support to complement the efforts of law enforcement agencies.

Addressing concerns regarding potential misuse of state police powers by governors, Speaker Obasa advocates for stringent checks and balances within the legal framework.

Proposals include allocating a dedicated portion of the Security Trust Fund to fortify the capabilities of the state security apparatus.

Beyond reactive measures, the Assembly stresses the importance of addressing root causes of insecurity through proactive strategies.
