The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has acknowledged a major setback, confirming that all routes used for the “hijrah”—the migration of foreign fighters into its ranks—have been effectively shut.

In a statement disseminated via unofficial media channels, the militant group attributed the closure to sustained military pressure. It described the situation as increasingly perilous, citing continuous attacks by what it termed “American dogs and the apostates of Nigeria.”

The admission marks a significant turning point in the counterterrorism campaign in Nigeria’s North-East. The severing of infiltration routes points to the growing effectiveness of sustained military operations, tightened border security, intelligence-led offensives, and enhanced regional cooperation across the Lake Chad Basin.

Security analysts view the development as evidence of steady gains by the Nigerian government and its security forces. These include the disruption of recruitment and logistics networks, and restricted movement of fighters across borders. ISWAP’s inability to safely channel foreign recruits into its strongholds underscores the increasing efficiency of ongoing counterterrorism efforts and highlights tangible progress in the fight against insurgency in the North-East.

Although challenges persist, the group’s own admission serves as further proof that the Nigerian government and its regional allies are steadily gaining the upper hand in the war on terror.
