Fresh Trouble In LP As 2014 Executives Seek Consent Judgement Implementation

Published

By Sunday Isuwa, Abuja

A new development has emerged in the Nigeria Labour Party (LP) as the 2014 executive members of the party regroup and call for the implementation of the consent judgement entered into in 2018. This consent judgement, if implemented, would render the leadership of Julius Abure illegitimate.

During a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, the 2014 acting National Chairman of the LP, Callistus Uju Okafor, and acting National Secretary, Mamman Bukar, emphasized that the national executive of the Labour Party in 2014 has the legal right to conduct a convention that would rectify any irregularities within the party.

Okafor, who presented court documents, revealed that Abure, who took over as chairman, had positioned himself at the national secretariat. The 2014 executive members are now at a turning point and are resolved to settle the long-standing legal battle for the soul of their party.

To provide context, Okafor explained that prior to the National Convention, the Nigeria Labour Congress had requested 10 million membership cards from the leadership of the Labour Party for their members across the country. However, the National Chairman at the time, Barr. Dan Nwayanwu, refused and advised the NLC members to join the party at their respective wards. This issue persisted until the party’s 2014 convention in Akure, Ondo state.

Okafor further revealed that on December 7, 2015, during a National Working Committee meeting in Lokoja, Kogi state, three items were discussed: Ali Abacha’s third term in office, Kayode Ajulo’s abuse of office, and Clement Ojukwu defrauding three members of the National Working Committee. As a result, Abacha voluntarily left the meeting, Ajulo resigned as National Secretary, and a committee was formed to investigate Ojukwu’s fraudulent activities.

On December 8, 2015, the National Executive Council ratified Abacha’s departure and Ajulo’s resignation. Barr. Julius Abure was then elevated to acting National Secretary. The Council also confirmed the disciplinary committee’s indefinite suspension imposed on Clement Ojukwu for bringing the party’s name into disrepute.

Moving forward, on October 3, 2017, a Special Convention was held in Abuja, where the National Chairman, Alhaji A. A. Salam, was constitutionally removed from office for embezzlement of party funds. Chief Callistus U. Okafor and Barr. Julius Abure presided over the convention as Deputy National Chairman and acting National Secretary, respectively.

However, Abure was later found guilty of diverting party funds into his personal account. He joined forces with Salam, who sought help from the NLC. Despite several peace meetings, a legal dispute settlement was reached, leading to the consent judgement.

According to the terms of the consent judgement, the Labour party, though not a trade union, was registered by the Nigeria Labour Congress for the betterment of Nigerian workers. The parties agreed to convene an all-inclusive National Convention as stipulated by the party’s constitution. The claimants forfeited all their claims, and the defendants were discharged from any further claims or liabilities.

Despite the consent judgement, Abure vehemently refused to comply and extended his tenure illegally. He conducted an unauthorized convention in 2019, which was in direct violation of the consent judgement. After the demise of Salam in November 2020, the Nigeria Labour Congress, led by Comrade Ayuba Waba, continued efforts to broker peace. However, Abure did not respect the mediated settlement and further extended his tenure unlawfully.

Following the expiration of the illegal extension, Abure extended his tenure for another year, which ended on June 27, 2024. As a result of these developments, the 2014 National Working Committee members, who are beneficiaries of the consent judgement, have agreed to facilitate an all-inclusive and expansive convention in compliance with the consent judgement delivered by Hon Justice G.O. Kolawole. They have also committed to reconciling with all aggrieved members and groups within six months to achieve a united and focused Labour Party.

This recent development has opened the door to potential further crisis within the party.

Suspension

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has cautioned Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Alex Otti, governor of Abia state, over alleged anti-party activities.

In a statement released after a national executive council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday, the faction cautioned Obi against any actions that could undermine the unity and integrity of the party.

“NEC in session in exercise of its duties, hereby caution the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace, unity, and integrity of the party as the NEC will not hesitate to issue stiffer penalties if found culpable,” the statement reads.

The party also took aim at Otti, accusing him of engaging in conduct contrary to the interests of the LP, including holding “unauthorised” stakeholder meetings and conducting LG elections using another political party.

According to NEC, Otti has been attempting to factionalise the party by convening what it described as an “illegal NEC” meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

The faction further alleged that the governor is plotting to destabilise the LP before defecting to another party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

“NEC in session notes the various anti-party activities of Gov. Alex Otti, including calling of unauthorized stakeholders meeting and usurping the powers of NEC,” the statement reads.

“He also conducted LGA elections using another political party. The governor has also intensified his effort to factionalize the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC schedule to hold on Wednesday.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is also aware of the governor’s plot to cripple our party before moving to another political party where he hopes to contest the 2027 governorship election.

“His anti-party activities are unbecoming of a highly respected personality and can no longer be acceptable. NEC stated that it will not hesitate to discipline him in line with Article 19 of the Party’s Constitution.

“NEC in session noted that it would not hesitate to discipline any other erring member who violates the party constitution regardless of how big or powerful such individuals may be.”

On Monday, Obi and Otti announced a stakeholders’ summit set for Wednesday, April 9.

Abia: I will retire when I finish my 8 years tenure – Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has firmly ruled out any plans to contest for a Senate seat after his tenure ends.

He made the declaration on Saturday during a reception held in his honour by the Anambra Development Unions Association, Aba branch.

Otti dismissed speculations of a senatorial ambition, describing the rumours as baseless and misleading.

“When I finish my eight years here, I will retire. I am not going to Abuja,” Otti said, urging critics to stop spreading falsehoods.

He stressed the need to give room for younger leaders, citing the evolving political landscape and rising youth participation.

“We are no longer that young. Society is changing, and the young ones are rising. It’s time we give them the opportunity,” he added.

The governor also announced plans to revisit the 2011 disengagement of 154 state workers, mostly teachers, from the civil service.

He said the State Head of Service would be directed to urgently review the matter for possible redress.

Otti hinted that those under 65 might be reengaged on contract, especially given the teacher shortage across the state.

He criticised the workers’ dismissal on the basis of state of origin, calling it unjust and illegal.

“For those outside the age bracket, we’ll find fair compensation mechanisms,” the governor assured.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice, inclusivity, and correcting the wrongs of previous governments.

In separate remarks, lawmaker Stephen Ucheonye and Chief Obiora Nwakpadolo praised Otti’s leadership and developmental strides.

They said the governor’s performance inspired the decision to hold the reception in his honour. (NAN)

Nicholas Ukachukwu, a former House of Representatives member, has successfully obtained the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial ticket for the upcoming Anambra governorship election.

Ukachukwu won decisively during the party’s primary election held on Saturday, outpacing his nearest competitor, Valentine Ozigbo, along with other candidates by a significant margin.

He garnered 1,455 votes, while Ozigbo received 67 votes. Other aspirants, Edozie Madu and Johnbosco Onunkwo, secured 8 and 26 votes, respectively.

The Anambra governorship election is scheduled for November 8, 2025.

In a statement following his victory, Ukachukwu vowed to lead the state to the APC.

“We will ensure that Anambra is delivered to the APC. I want to emphasize that no one has ever won the governorship of Anambra without my backing; it has never occurred,” he remarked.

“I have played the role of a godfather, but now I aspire to be the father of the father — it’s time to move beyond the traditional godfather model.”

Notably, just hours before the primary election, three aspirants withdrew from the race, including former federal lawmaker Chukwuma Umeoji, Obiora Okonkwo, and Paul Chukwuma, who has since resigned from the party.
