The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has raised grave concerns over the persistent devastation inflicted upon the region by Boko Haram, ISWAP, bandits, and other terrorist factions.

In a statement released Wednesday by spokesperson Luka Binniyat, the Forum detailed the extensive toll on states including Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Kwara, Adamawa, Gombe, Kogi, Taraba, the Federal Capital Territory, and parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno and Yobe.

“These areas have suffered enormous human and economic losses as a result of persistent violence,” Binniyat stated.

The Forum expressed strong support for recent remarks by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, who urged his communities to organise collectively against growing threats of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

“The MBF fully identifies with the Emir’s concerns. We understand his frustration, fears and determination to protect his people from insecurity that continues to devastate communities across Hausa land and the Middle Belt,” the statement read.

Binniyat noted that if a respected traditional ruler from the Hausa heartland can openly encourage lawful community vigilance, then Middle Belt communities—which have borne the heaviest burdens—must initiate serious discussions on strengthening community safety within the law.

The Forum commended the Emir’s courage, patriotism and concern for his people’s welfare, describing his intervention as a timely wake-up call for all traditional rulers in the Middle Belt, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to follow suit.

The MBF also acknowledged growing indigenous Hausa voices calling for justice, self-determination, security and greater participation in shaping their political and economic future.

“The over 200 ethnic nationalities of the Middle Belt stand in solidarity with all Hausa people who believe in a peaceful, secure, democratic and prosperous Nigeria, where every group enjoys equal rights and opportunities away from the domination of a minority,” Binniyat said.

He stressed that the time has come for greater cooperation between Hausa land and the Middle Belt, who together form the majority population of Northern Nigeria. The Forum urged both groups to work towards improved security, economic development and a stronger political partnership reflecting ordinary people’s aspirations.

“We cannot allow historical grievances, religious and ethnic divides to shackle us for the exploitation and domination of a more organised minority in both the Middle Belt and Hausa Land,” Binniyat warned.

The Middle Belt Forum has declared its willingness to champion this vital conversation.
