The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday commissioned the new national headquarters of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) in Gwarinpa, Abuja, while also announcing a personal donation of N100 million to support the organisation’s staff and volunteers.
Mrs Tinubu, who was formally invested as the Society’s first Grand Matron on Thursday at the State House, described the new facility as a testament to the NRCS’s enduring commitment to alleviating human suffering and bringing hope to the most vulnerable.
“I am confident that this new office building will further strengthen the society’s capacity to coordinate its humanitarian activities, enhance operational effectiveness, and deepen its impact across Nigeria,” she said.
She commended the Society’s leadership, staff, partners and volunteers for their dedication and sacrifice, noting that their selfless service had made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless individuals and families.
“Whether providing first aid or responding to disasters, supporting victims of conflict, promoting health and well-being, or providing humanitarian assistance to communities in need, the Society has remained steadfast in its mission of serving humanity without discrimination,” she added.
Earlier, the NRCS National President, Mr Oluyemisi Adeaga, expressed gratitude to the First Lady and also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu, the Society’s Grand Patron, for his support in realising a befitting facility for humanitarian operations and research.
Mr Adeaga noted that Nigeria faces considerable humanitarian challenges, including hostage situations, hunger and the impact of climate change, and called for renewed collective action to serve humanity appropriately.
“We want to say that now, we need you more, because this is the time we are supposed to come together and ensure that humanity is served appropriately,” he said, while pledging that the NRCS would continue to strive despite funding constraints.
Also speaking, the Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Nigeria, Ms Doris El Doueihy, reaffirmed her organisation’s commitment to providing aid, healthcare and protection to populations affected by armed conflict in the North-East and North‑West regions.
“Today is about creating a platform for humanitarian action and ensuring that Nigerians benefit from the support of the Red Cross,” she said.
The new headquarters is expected to enhance the NRCS’s operational effectiveness and coordination, positioning the Society for greater impact in the years ahead.
