Federal Fire Service personnel have salvaged property valued at approximately N400 million following a fierce fire outbreak at Wapa Market, Fagge, near GTBank in Kano State.
Kano State Controller of the FFS, Sadiq Usman-Mahmud, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday by the service’s Public Relations Officer, Al-Hassan Kantin.
According to the controller, the service received a distress call at approximately 1:58 pm on Friday from a concerned member of the public, prompting an immediate deployment of firefighters from the Federal Secretariat Fire Station to the scene.
“Upon receiving the report, we immediately deployed a team of firefighters from the Federal Secretariat station to the scene,” Mr Usman-Mahmud stated.
“The incident involved a two-storey commercial building covering an estimated area of 50 by 50 metres. On arrival, the fire had affected the ground floor. We successfully quenched the affected section to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building and surrounding properties.”
The controller disclosed that property worth N100 million was lost in the blaze, though no casualties were recorded. He added that firefighters conducted a thorough inspection to eliminate any further risk of ignition.
Solar Installation Blamed
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was triggered by a defective solar installation, Mr Usman-Mahmud revealed.
In response, the controller urged members of the public to ensure that all solar installations are carried out by qualified professionals and inspected regularly to avert unforeseen incidents. He also advised citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any signs of fire or electrical faults to the relevant authorities.
