FHA BEGINS REHABILITATION OF FESTAC TOWN ROADS

The Management of Federal Housing Authority has commenced the rehabilitation of roads in Festac Town Lagos, starting from the 1st Avenue.

Inspecting the progress of work on Thursday 22nd August 2024, the Managing Director and Chief Executive, Hon Oyetunde Ojo said rehabilitation of the roads will be in phases, and expressed the willingness of the Authority to address the decay in the town.

According to Hon Ojo, “restoring the glory of Festac Town has gone beyond mere rhetorics, but will now be matched with visible actions”. He noted that Festac Town is more than just an estate in Nigeria but a national monument. He therefore stated that FHA would do everything it takes to restore the lost glory of the town.

Hon. Ojo however called on the residents to work with the Authority to achieve this. He called on allotees to cooperate with FHA by paying all their statutory fees, noting that the Authority needs to generate funds from its properties to operate since it is no longer in government appropriation.

The Federal Housing Authority Managing Director had earlier in a meeting with the Festac Town Residents Association (FTRA) solicited their cooperation with FHA to serve them better.

The Managing Director informed the FTRA members that FHA has no funding/budget/allocation from the Federal Government and that if the Authority is expected to live up to is obligations and functions, it needs money to work. This money he said can only be raised from the properties it has.

The FHA boss used the opportunity to explain the reasons and Management’s intentions behind the on going verification exercise in the Authority. This he said is to capture the most recent and accurate data of all property owners in the Authority’s data base since FHA has digitalised its operations.

He reiterated the management’s rejection of the old analogue system with the high risk of property information being left in paper/file format. This he noted is susceptible to fire, theft, misplacement and other negative factors.

Preventing this and for easy retrieval he said is the main essence of the verification and digitalisation exercise by the Authority.

The Managing Director ruled the fact that about 4000 residents in Festac are yet to offset the mortgages on their properties that had 30 years window of payment.

Hon encourages allotees to avail themselves of the opportunity of this nation wide verification exercise to update their record’s with FHA, noting that of the estimated 23,000 FHA approved properties in Festac, about 11,000 have done the verification, representing about 50%.l The Managing Director however, posited that FHA would only recognize thr verified properties after the exercise.

On the ongoing rehabilitation work going on, Hon Ojo said that the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gates will be looked into starting with the demolition of the old 1st gate and
erection of a new morden structure, clearing of all illegal structures on that axis, fixing of solar street lights on the stretch of 1st Avenue, from the 1st gate to the junction of 11 road, clearing of the median and keeping it clean, and palliative repairs on the inward and outward roads of 1st gate.

The Managing Director also hinted on the repairs of the 3.2km stretch of 2nd Avenue, which will cost about 7 billion Naira. This he said FHA will try to influence through Federal Government, but that palliative jobs will be done to still keep it in use .

The FHA Chief Executive warned that he will be visiting 6th Avenue to carry out demolition exercise on properties that have been marked by the Authority, noting that some of the marked buildings are showing visible signs of integrity failure and are at the verge of collapsing.

He posited that if the owners decide to break them down themselves, they will still have their lands to their names, but if FHA is to demolish the houses, the owners will loose the land title.

NDA inaugurates Queen Amina statute, other projects

Published

The Commandant, Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Maj.-Gen. John Ochai, on Monday in Kaduna inaugurated the Queen Amina of Zazzau statute at the academy.

Ochai also inaugurated the Nigerian Defence Academy Officers Wives Association Secretariat and two vehicles.

He also inaugurated three four-bedroom flats each for senior staff of the academy.

The commandant said, “Queen Amina of Zazzau who was a warrior Queen, lived in this part of the country in the 15th century.”

Ochai said that her statute was put in place to motivate the cadets to put in their best and to imbibe some of the qualities with which she was known for.

He said and as it was recorded in the Kano Chronicles and also corroborated by oral tradition that she embodied leadership, courage, integrity, determination and bravery.

Ochai said, “These are the qualities we want our characters to have.

“The significance is that we are telling our own story in this part of Africa that there was a time there was a great queen in an era where when in other parts of the world bravery and warrior ship was still a masculine affair.

“So, Africa has had its great women before colonialism came, so it’s not a new thing we had a gender equality and we had women that have held their own.

“I must state here that the Queen Amina of Zazzau at the height of her reign occupied a territory of about 400,000 kilometers square which is about 40 to 50 per cent of the territory we now call Nigeria.

“So, you can imagine the magnitude of the area she controlled and this was as a result of her determination and leadership .”

The commandant, therefore, urged the cadets to imbibe those qualities, adding, “that’s why we are honouring her.

“As you are aware, the Nigerian Defence Academy is located in Kaduna State and it’s part of the territory she once controlled and holds sway and that’s why we are recognising her as a warrior as well as a female.

“Today, we inaugurated the Nigerian Defence Academy Officers Wives Association Secretariat which was before now in the old academy’s site at the Ribadu Cantonment,” Ochai said.

He said the event marked a significant step in moving the officers wives and their activities to the permanent site.

Ochai added, “We also inaugurated three flats, four bedroom each for senior staff of the academy and the aim of this is to ensure that their welfare is well taken care of and that will motivate them to put in their best.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NDA organised a Regimental Concert in honour of Ochai who is expected to hand over to his successor, Maj.-Gen. Abdul Ibrahim, on Tuesday. (NAN)

Oluwole Oke: Defection Backfires As Cracks Widen In His Political Camp

Aides, Allies Disown Him, Say You’re a Traitor, We’re not Leaving PDP

Barely two weeks after his defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), crisis has enveloped the political camp of a member of the House of Representatives for Obokun/Oriade federal constituency in Osun State, Oluwole Oke.

Indeed, these are not the best of times for him as his defection to the APC is eliciting rejection from his close circles and constituency.

His key allies who he groomed into politics and government positions have rejected his calls on them to join him to defect to the APC.

A source said that in the last few days, key aides and allies of the lawmaker have rejected his movement to the APC, describing it as a political tragedy.

“With the way he betrayed PDP, Oluwole Oke is like the proverbial Leopard that can never change the spots on its body. He will also betray the APC. We are staying back in PDP while severing political links with him”, one of his allies, Bamidele Johnson said.

Some of his allies were said to have openly declared that the defection marks a political waterloo for the 6th term legislator.

For instance, some of Oke’s allies in his Local Government scorned his move as “a decision borne out of greed and selfishness.”

One of them described him as “an ingrate who betrayed a party on whose platform he got married in life as a lawmaker and on whose platform he gained all his material riches.”
