In a significant move towards modernization and convenience, the Federal Government, in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), is set to launch an innovative national identity card.
This revolutionary card, developed in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System, promises to redefine the concept of identification in Nigeria.
Under the umbrella of AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme, this enhanced national ID card will not only serve as a means of identification but will also incorporate cutting-edge payment capabilities and social service features.
Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, revealed this groundbreaking development in a statement issued on Friday.
The national ID card, fortified with verifiable National Identity features, is backed by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, which mandates the enrollment and issuance of a general multipurpose card to Nigerians and legal residents.
This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of providing a robust and secure identification system for its citizens.
One of the primary objectives of this initiative is to cater to the growing need for physical identification while ensuring the authenticity and security of the card.
With this enhanced national ID card, cardholders will have the convenience of verifying their identity and accessing a myriad of government and private social services seamlessly.
It is important to note that only registered citizens and legal residents possessing the National Identification Number (NIN) will be eligible to request this innovative national ID card. This measure ensures the integrity and exclusivity of the card, reinforcing its role as a trusted form of identification in the digital age.
