The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has directed all primary and secondary school teachers to begin an indefinite strike from Monday.

The directive was contained in a communique issued after an emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Friday. The communique was signed by the state chairman, Abdullahi Shafa; state secretary, Margaret Jethro; and state publicity secretary, Ibukun Adekeye.

The union urged teachers to comply fully and await further instructions. Parents have been advised to keep their children at home until further notice.

The decision follows the expiry of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, on 11 March, which lapsed on 29 March. The union said teachers would remain at home until all their demands are met.

While acknowledging the minister’s implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage and payment of nine months’ arrears to FCT primary school teachers, the union expressed concern that other key issues remained unresolved.

According to the communique, a committee constituted by the minister on 7 July 2025—tasked with harmonising outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers within two weeks—submitted its report in August 2025. However, the report has yet to be made public.

The union also called for:

· The removal of the “vacancies” precondition for classroom teachers’ promotion
· A full review of the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission

“Following the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum on 19 March, including an additional 28-day grace period granted to the authorities, there has been no tangible response to all the issues raised,” the union stated.

“After exhaustive deliberations, the Council resolved that all public primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT shall, with effect from Monday, proceed on an indefinite strike until our demands are met.”
