Ayo Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State, has advised Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to refrain from pursuing another presidential election in Nigeria.
Atiku has previously contested for the presidency in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023, experiencing setbacks in three primary elections. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayose expressed his views on the ongoing issues within the PDP, stating, “At this stage, with all due respect, he may prefer to step back from the electoral contest.”
Fayose, who is 63, indicated that the allure of the presidency may diminish for someone in their 80s by the time the next election cycle approaches. “By the time Bola Tinubu completes his term, Atiku Abubakar will likely be 80 or 81; what would be the incentive then?” he questioned. He emphasized the importance of knowing when to exit the political arena, remarking, “We should leave the stage when the ovation is loudest. I respect him, but I believe Nigerians are increasingly yearning for a younger leadership.”
Despite Fayose’s sentiments regarding Atiku’s potential candidacy in the 2027 elections, Atiku remains hopeful about his prospects. The 77-year-old politician conveyed optimism during a May interview with Voice of America Hausa, stating, “God willing,” when asked about a possible run. He further affirmed his determination to pursue the presidency as long as he is granted strength, good health, and longevity.
