ZONKWA, Kaduna State – A 33-year-old farmer, Hosea Julius, has been ordered to remain in a correctional centre by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Zonkwa, Kaduna State, following his arraignment on charges of abduction and culpable homicide.

The suspect was brought before the court by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which accused him of the kidnap and subsequent death of a 21-year-old woman, the daughter of his neighbour, Peter Patrick.

The case has drawn sharp attention in the Kagoro community of Kafanchan local government area, where both families reside. It underscores a disturbing trend of violence in rural communities, where trust among neighbours is increasingly being shattered by heinous crimes.

Prosecution Alleges Premeditated Abduction

Presenting the facts before Chief Magistrate Michael Bawa, the NSCDC prosecutor, Marcus Audu, detailed the events leading to the suspect’s arrest.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant, Mr Patrick, reported the matter at the NSCDC office in Kafanchan on March 13. In his statement, Mr Patrick told officers that the suspect, Hosea Julius, had visited his home while he was absent and left the premises with his 21-year-old daughter.

“The complainant searched for his daughter extensively but could not locate her,” Mr Audu told the court. “After 18 days, the suspect telephoned the complainant and informed him that his daughter had been admitted to the Kafanchan General Hospital.”

Alarmed by the news, Mr Patrick rushed to the hospital, where he found his daughter in a comatose state. Medical staff confirmed that she had been brought in with severe injuries, though the exact cause of her condition has not yet been disclosed in open court.

Tragically, two days after her admission, the young woman succumbed to her injuries and died, the prosecutor said.

Court Declines to Take Plea

Chief Magistrate Michael Bawa, after listening to the prosecution’s summary, declined to take the suspect’s plea, citing lack of jurisdiction. Under Nigerian law, magistrates’ courts do not have the authority to try cases of culpable homicide, which fall under the exclusive purview of a high court.

Mr Bawa ordered that the suspect, Hosea Julius, be remanded in a correctional facility pending further legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The magistrate directed the prosecutor to forward the complete case file to the DPP for an independent legal opinion and necessary action.

The case has been adjourned until April 29 for further mention.

Community in Shock

The Kagoro community, known for its predominantly agrarian lifestyle and close-knit social fabric, has been left reeling by the allegations. Neighbours of both families expressed disbelief that a local farmer could allegedly commit such an act against a neighbour’s child.

“We have known Hosea as a quiet farmer. He never showed any sign of aggression,” said one resident who declined to be named for fear of reprisal. “But if what the NSCDC says is true, then he must face the full wrath of the law. That young girl’s life mattered.”

Others have called for a thorough investigation, noting that the 18-day gap between the disappearance and the suspect’s phone call to the victim’s father raises serious questions about what happened during that period.

“Why did he wait 18 days to tell the father his daughter was in hospital?” asked a local youth leader. “Where was she all that time? We need answers.”

Legal Context: Culpable Homicide in Nigerian Law

Under the Nigerian Criminal Code, culpable homicide is a grave offence that encompasses both murder and manslaughter. It is defined as the unlawful killing of a human being, and it becomes murder if the act was done with the intention of causing death or grievous bodily harm.

If the prosecution can prove that Mr Julius intended to cause the young woman’s death or knew that his actions would likely result in fatal injuries, he could face a murder charge. Conversely, if the death resulted from negligence or an unintentional act, the charge may be reduced to manslaughter.

Legal experts note that the DPP’s legal advice will be critical in determining the next steps. The DPP may recommend that the case be transferred to the High Court for trial, or if evidence is insufficient, the suspect could be discharged.

Rising Concern Over Kidnapping in Rural Nigeria

This incident adds to a growing wave of abduction cases across northern Nigeria, although most are typically linked to banditry and ransom-seeking. In this instance, the motive remains unclear, as no demand for ransom was reported.

According to data from the Nigeria Security Tracker, over 3,600 people were abducted in Nigeria in 2024 alone, with Kaduna State consistently ranking among the most affected. While many cases are financially motivated, others involve personal disputes, ritual killings, or gender-based violence.

The NSCDC, which has statutory responsibility for protecting lives and property, has stepped up its presence in rural areas. However, community leaders argue that more needs to be done to rebuild trust and ensure swift justice.

What Happens Next?

With Mr Julius remanded and the case file heading to the DPP, the next legal milestone is the adjourned date of April 29. On that day, the court expects to receive the DPP’s advice, which will determine whether the suspect is released, re-arrested on fresh charges, or remanded further pending trial at a higher court.

If the DPP finds a prima facie case of culpable homicide, the matter will be transferred to the Kaduna State High Court. A trial there could take months or even years, depending on the complexity of evidence and witness testimony.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased is left to mourn a young life cut tragically short. Relatives have appealed for justice, urging security agencies and the judiciary to ensure that the case is not delayed or swept aside.

“We want the court to do its job quickly and fairly,” a family spokesperson said. “No parent should have to bury their child under these circumstances.”

Conclusion

The case of Hosea Julius serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young women in rural Nigeria, even within communities bound by neighbourly ties. As the wheels of justice begin to turn, all eyes will be on the Kaduna State judiciary to see whether this case will become a precedent for accountability or yet another statistic in the nation’s troubled justice landscape.
