Comrade Mubarak Shi’itu, former Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State, has advised Governor Dauda Lawal to safeguard and complete the cargo airport project initiated by his predecessor, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle.

Shi’itu issued the warning in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, citing concerns about selfish aides allegedly plotting to sabotage the project from within. He emphasized the importance of completing the airport, which was initially awarded to AVIC International Engineering Limited for ₦11.4 billion.

The Zamfara State government had already paid ₦5.8 billion (50% of the contract sum) to the contractors, with ₦3.5 billion (30% mobilization) paid initially and an additional ₦2.3 billion (20% of the contract sum) due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Shi’itu expressed concern that the project, crucial for promoting trade and tourism in the state, might be abandoned halfway by the end of the administration’s tenure. He noted that the project’s cost jumped to ₦62.8 billion after Governor Lawal revoked and reviewed the contract, sparking criticisms and outcry over the alleged exaggeration of the project sum.

The youth leader emphasized the need for Governor Lawal to closely monitor the project’s progress and ensure its completion within the stipulated timeframe. He acknowledged the controversy surrounding the project during the previous administration and the subsequent review of the project sum to over ₦60 billion.

“It will be highly disappointing if this project, which has generated so much interest and investment, is left uncompleted,” Shi’itu warned. “We urge Governor Lawal to prioritize its completion and ensure that the resources committed to it are utilized effectively.”of

Shi’itu, a staunch supporter of Governor Dauda Lawal, vowed to expose the plot, citing the recent protests against hardship and bad governance, where some youths were allegedly engaged to destroy properties under the guise of politics.

He suggested that if the governor is unable to complete the project as promised or requires additional funding, he should review the project sum again for the benefit of the state citizens.

As a patriotic member of the PDP, Shi’itu pledged to continue monitoring and assessing government projects to ensure timely execution, quality work, and judicious use of resources. He emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.”

“We will not condone or support any nefarious activities, especially those masquerading as politics, which aim to destroy public facilities or orchestrate crimes. We urge Governor Lawal to ensure the protection and preservation of all public facilities in the state, lest he be accused of dereliction of duty.

As responsible citizens and stakeholders, we demand transparency, accountability, and good governance. We will continue to speak out against any actions that undermine the well-being and progress of our state and its people.”
