The Edo State Government has announced plans to recruit an additional 3,000 teachers to enhance teaching capacity and improve learning outcomes in public schools across the state.
Governor Monday Okpebholo made this statement during a visit from the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), led by its state chairman, Bernard Ajobiewe, on Wednesday in Benin.
Governor Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s commitment to education as a fundamental element of human development, emphasising that teachers are a key priority within his development agenda.
He noted that his government has built and renovated dilapidated schools and regularised the employment of over 5,000 Edo-Star teachers who had remained on contract for more than three years under the previous administration.
The governor expressed his gratitude to Edo teachers for their dedication and patriotism in shaping the future of the state.
“Teachers are a top priority in our development agenda. We are constructing and refurbishing schools throughout Edo, and as infrastructure improves, so too must our manpower.
“Our aim is to ensure that no school is without a qualified teacher and that every child receives quality education in a supportive learning environment,” he stated.
Earlier, Mr Ajobiewe presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Governor Okpebholo, accompanied by Jormah Egwahide, the acting chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter.
The NUT award was presented in recognition of Mr Okpebholo’s outstanding reforms and dedication to enhancing the education sector in the state.
In response, both the NUT and NLC welcomed the governor’s recruitment of an additional 3,000 teachers, stating that this development would significantly improve the quality of education in public schools.
