The National Coordinator of Musawah for Youth Development Initiative, Dr Polycarp Danladi Gankon, has called on Nigerians to use Democracy Day to honour those who fought for the nation’s democratic rule.

In a statement marking June 12, Ambassador Polycarp described democracy as more than elections. “It is the freedom to express ideas, hold leaders accountable, and work together in pursuit of progress and development,” he said.

Speaking on Friday, 12th June 2026, he noted that the date serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless patriots who fought for a Nigeria where every citizen’s voice matters and where leadership derives legitimacy from the will of the people.

“As we reflect on our democratic journey, we must recognise that democracy delivers its greatest value when it improves lives,” he said. “For our youths, democracy must mean access to opportunities, education, skills, and employment. For our women, it must mean inclusion, empowerment, and equal participation in nation-building. For our communities, it must mean development, security, and hope for a better future.”

Dr Polycarp reaffirmed that Musawah for Youth and Development (4 Y-D) Initiative strongly believes democracy must be felt at the grassroots. “This conviction is the foundation of our work. Through community engagement, youth empowerment, women-focused programmes, civic participation, and grassroots mobilisation, we remain committed to ensuring that citizens become active stakeholders in the development process.”

The organisation also expressed support for progressive leadership and good governance, acknowledging the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the developmental strides of Governor Uba Sani in Kaduna State.

“On this Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, tolerance, patriotism, and active citizenship. Let us reject division and embrace dialogue. Let us move beyond complaints and become partners in building stronger communities and a stronger nation,” he urged.

“Nigeria’s future will not be built by leaders alone. It will be built by citizens who understand that democracy works best when everyone plays a role.”

He encouraged all Nigerians, especially young people, to engage constructively in the democratic process and contribute positively to national growth. “As we celebrate this important day, I urge all members of Musawah 4 Y-D Initiative and Nigerians across the country to remain hopeful, resilient, and committed to the ideals of democracy and development.”
