Delta Government on Thursday distributed 940 bags of rice and 150 bags of garri as palliatives to the 11 wards in Oshimili South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

The distribution of the food items, in 25 kilogrammes bags, was supervised at the council secretariat in Asaba by a member of the state House of Assembly, Mrs Bridget Anyafulu (PDP-Oshimili South).

Anyafulu emphasised that the food items were strictly for vulnerable residents across the 11 wards of the council and not to be given to the rich.

“Take these food items to your various wards, distribute and let the people see the transparency in us for them to know that we are ready to serve them.

“And at the end of the day, let them be the ones that will speak for us and not us speaking for ourselves.

“’Let us be sincere to God by ensuring that we distribute these food items to the right people because anything we are doing, we are doing it for God.

“And that is not to say that you cannot give to your relatives who are poor,” she said.

Anyafulu, who also chairs the Palliative Council in the LGA, emphasised the need for the coordinators to ensure that persons with disabilities benefit from the gesture.

According to her, the percentage of people with disabilities must always be carried along in all that is done in the local government because they are part of all.

The lawmaker, while commending both the federal and state governments for the provision, noted that the initiative was aimed at addressing the ongoing food crisis in the country.

Anyafulu said the distribution committee members were not politicians but were carefully selected to ensure transparency in the distribution process.

“The committee members are representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Civil Society Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, traditional rulers and youth leaders among others,” she said.

Responding on behalf of the ward leaders, Mr Emordi Obiora, from Ward 1, Oko Community, commended the government and assured that the items would be distributed to the targeted beneficiaries. (NAN
