Rear Admiral Katagum, a former Director of Naval Intelligence and recently appointed Chief of Operations, died while receiving medical treatment in Egypt.

The minister donated N10m and 10 bags of rice to the family.

In a statement signed by his Personal Assistant on Media, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, on Tuesday, the minister said the visit was to honour a man whose contributions to national security were profound.

Matawalle was received by colleagues of the late officer, members of the 41 Regular Course, family members and associates.

He described Katagum as a highly respected officer who served the Nigerian Navy with uncommon dedication and remained deeply committed to the nation’s maritime security.

“We are very proud of what he achieved,” the minister said.

“Rear Admiral Katagum’s contributions to national security were immeasurable. He played a pivotal role in shaping operational strategies, strengthening intelligence capabilities and mentoring generations of officers who emulated his professionalism and dedication.”

Matawalle added that the late admiral’s insight and meticulous approach ensured that the Navy remained vigilant and ready to defend Nigeria’s maritime interests.

He noted that Katagum’s efforts significantly enhanced operational readiness and safeguarded the country’s territorial waters.

The minister said the visit was also to pray for the family.

“May Allah the Almighty strengthen the family at this time, and may the children grow to be even greater than their father,” he prayed.

“May Allah grant him Jannah,” he added.
