The race for the Zango/Jaba Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives intensified on Saturday as All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Hon. Sylvester Anthony, widely known as “Brando,” formally declared his candidacy.

The declaration took place in Zonkwa, headquarters of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, immediately following the inauguration of his constituency offices in Jaba LGA and Zonkwa. The event drew party stalwarts, supporters, and government officials, signalling a concerted APC push to consolidate influence in Southern Kaduna.

Anthony, a National Assembly staff member, said his bid is driven by the urgent need for purposeful representation to tackle persistent challenges such as insecurity, poor infrastructure, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and youth unemployment.

Policy blueprint

Unveiling his policy direction, Anthony pledged:

· Legislative representation: People-centred leadership leveraging his experience and networks to attract federal projects.
· Security: Support for security agencies, plus community dialogue to foster peace.
· Education: Technology-driven learning, foundational literacy, scholarships, and social protection for students.
· Healthcare: Structured interventions to improve public health systems and awareness.
· Agribusiness: Enhanced productivity, food security, and economic empowerment for farmers.
· Infrastructure: Lobbying for federal and state road projects to boost connectivity.
· Youth and women: Skills acquisition, capacity building, and sustainable livelihood programmes.

“Our people deserve purposeful representation that prioritises safety, economic wellbeing, and development. I am stepping forward to offer that leadership,” Anthony said.

Mobilisation and endorsements

As part of his campaign launch, the aspirant distributed 50 motorcycles and seven campaign vehicles. A student beneficiary of his scholarship scheme, Faith Progress Isfifanus, said: “We are here to support the aspirant and protect his votes.”

Executive Chairman of Zangon-Kataf LGA, Engr. Joseph Bege Gaiya, hailed the unprecedented show of unity, noting that Anthony had already begun implementing parts of his manifesto, including providing jobs for over 100 people. “These are the kind of people we must elect,” he said.

Kaduna Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) Chairman, Comrade Jerry Adams, described Anthony as a people-centred leader and urged residents to back him for the constituency’s overall development.

APC stakeholders called for unity among aspirants, stressing that internal cohesion is critical to electoral success. Legislators representing Zango and Jaba—Hon. Samuel Kambai and Engr. Henry Marah—expressed confidence in Anthony’s capacity and declared support for the APC’s broader agenda, including the re-election bids of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani.

Constituency context

Elanza News reports that Zango/Jaba remains a politically sensitive constituency in Southern Kaduna, where residents consistently demand improved security, economic opportunities, and a stronger federal presence. While some residents welcomed Anthony’s declaration, others urged aspirants to move beyond promises and deliver tangible outcomes.

“We need a representative who will truly speak for the people and bring development closer to our communities,” a resident said.
