Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, defeating former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and ex-banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in a landslide primary.

The party announced the results on Wednesday evening, with Atiku securing 1,855,787 votes. Amaechi polled 509,397, while Hayatu-Deen garnered 180,903.

Atiku defeated Amaechi by a margin of 1,346,390 votes and led Hayatu-Deen by 1,674,884 votes. Total votes cast stood at 2,546,457, out of a party membership of 3,113,599.

The ADC commenced its presidential primary on Monday, May 25, 2026, with members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participating. The party adopted the direct primary method after the three leading aspirants rejected appeals to step down for a consensus candidate.

Although party leaders initially considered an affirmation process, the ADC ultimately complied with the Electoral Act 2026 by opting for direct primaries.
