The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has urged Osun State voters to support its governorship candidate, Adewale Adebayo, in the upcoming August election, warning that legal complications could undermine the outcome if alternative candidates prevail.

Abubakar Yusuf, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made the appeal on Tuesday in Abuja, citing the precarious legal status of political parties facing potential deregistration. He drew parallels with the 2015 Kogi State governorship election, where the late Prince Abubakar Audu won but died before the conclusion of the process, triggering a constitutional crisis.

“Osun may witness a similar scenario where a governor who wins the election could be disqualified by the court, given the lingering threat of party deregistration,” Yusuf cautioned.

The APM spokesman described the party as the most viable option for Osun and the South West region, given the current political dynamics. He urged the electorate to move beyond the politics of imposition and the dominance of older politicians who, he claimed, prioritise confrontation over development.

Yusuf characterised Adebayo as a young, energetic, and well-exposed politician capable of elevating the state to greater heights and delivering on its promise of prosperity.

In a separate remark, Yusuf congratulated Governor Seyi Makinde on flying the APM presidential ticket, commending him for upholding the spirit of the region’s political founding fathers who championed opposition politics as a catalyst for development.

“What Awolowo, S.L.A. Akintola, and even President Bola Ahmed Tinubu achieved in Lagos during the early days of democracy is now manifesting in the South West, with Seyi Makinde flagging the APM presidential ticket,” he said.

He dismissed criticism of Makinde’s decision, noting that Lagos in the First Republic accommodated diverse political affiliations, including Zikists and Awoists, who operated as opposition parties.

Yusuf maintained that the APM would attract the development the South West and Nigeria urgently require.
