The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has screened more than 70 governorship aspirants on the opening day of its candidate selection exercise ahead of the party’s primaries.

Queen Okiyi, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, briefed journalists on Monday in Abuja, confirming that the process went smoothly. Two screening panels reviewed 35 aspirants each.

According to Ms Okiyi, over 100 governorship candidates from states where elections are due to take place are taking part in the exercise. She added that screening would resume on Tuesday to accommodate more aspirants.

“So far, the screening has come to an end today, and screening continues tomorrow,” she said.

Ms Okiyi noted that the process underscores the party’s commitment to due process and credible candidate selection.

The ADC has scheduled the screening of presidential aspirants for Wednesday, 20 May. Meanwhile, due to security concerns, the screening of National Assembly aspirants from parts of northern Nigeria will now be held in Abuja.
