Nigeria will next week welcome a high-level international forum in Abuja, focused on the critical intersection of climate change, fragility, and peacebuilding.

The 2026 Peer Learning Forum on Peacebuilding and National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Processes takes place from May 5 to 7 at the Abuja Continental Hotel. Co-hosted by the Federal Government and the NAP Global Network, the event will bring together African NAP teams, environment and security ministries, and other key sectoral stakeholders.

The timing is significant: many African nations are enduring overlapping climate shocks, displacement, and violent conflict, which increasingly complicate adaptation planning. Organisers aim to help countries embed peacebuilding directly into climate strategies.

Key agenda items include implementing National Adaptation Plans in fragile and conflict-affected regions, aligning adaptation with peacebuilding goals, and examining successful measures that deliver peacebuilding co-benefits in vulnerable communities. Technical peer exchanges will support translating policy into actionable frameworks at national and subnational levels.

For Nigeria, the forum is expected to reinforce its continental leadership in climate diplomacy and environmental governance, as it continues to confront desertification, flooding, and farmer-herder conflicts. Observers suggest the outcome may shape future adaptation policies across Africa, where sustainable peace and environmental resilience are increasingly inseparable priorities.

The Federal Ministry of Environment confirmed that accredited media organisations may cover the opening ceremony on May 5, but attendance is strictly by prior confirmation owing to limited capacity and security protocols.
