Abbas, Ben Kalu secure APC tickets for 2027 house of reps election

Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives, and Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker, have secured the tickets of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest for another term.

The APC announced the results of its primary elections for federal constituencies in Kaduna state on Saturday.

Yakubu Hosseini, chairman of the house of representatives primary election committee, said the exercise was conducted in line with the constitution and guidelines of the party.

For Zaria federal constituency, Abbas emerged unopposed with 930 votes.

“Right Honourable Abbas Tajuddeen, having satisfied the requirements of APC Constitution and Guidelines and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner of the primary election and is returned elected as the party’s House of Representatives candidate for Zaria Federal Constituency,” Hosseini said.

In Zango Kataf/Jaba federal constituency, Amos Magaji also emerged through consensus after polling 1,930 votes, while Samaila Suleiman secured victory in the Kaduna north federal constituency, with 3,049 votes.

Suleiman defeated Abdulaziz Kaka, who polled 65 votes, and Abubakar Mahmoud, who had 96 votes.

“Honourable Samaila Abdul Suleiman, having satisfied the requirements of APC constitutions and guidelines and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner of the primary election,” Hosseini said.

In Kaura federal constituency, Benjamin Gugong polled 1,085 votes to defeat Donatus Mathieu, who recorded 255 votes.

The APC also announced Mukhtar Chiawai as the consensus candidate for Kauru federal constituency with 1,750 votes.

Felix Bagudu emerged the winner for Kachia federal constituency with 1,580 votes, while Daniel Amos was declared the winner for Jema’a/Sanga federal constituency.

For the Kagarko/Kachia federal constituency, Gabriel Salle also emerged victorious.

Sadiq Abdullahi, son of elder statesman Ango Abdullahi, scored 920 votes to win his constituency’s contest.

Other winners announced by the party include Muhammad Jallo, who scored 1,171 votes, and Bashir Suleiman Juntu, who polled 1,787 votes in their respective constituencies.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present during the collation of results.

KALU EMERGES UNOPPOSED IN ABIA

In Abia state, the deputy speaker was unopposed during the APC primary election for the Bende federal constituency seat.

The exercise was conducted across the 13 electoral wards in the constituency.

The wards include Alayi, Bende, Ezeukwu, Igbere, Item, Itumbuzo, Nkpa, Ntalakwu, Ozuitem, Ugwueke, Umu-Imenyi, Umuhu-Ezechi, and Uzuakoli.

According to a statement issued by Udora Orizu, Kalu’s media aide, party leaders, ward executives, and delegates unanimously endorsed the deputy speaker for another term.

Orizu said the stakeholders commended Kalu’s legislative performance and constituency projects since his election into the national assembly.

Kalu, who was first elected to the house in 2019 and became deputy speaker in 2023, thanked party members, traditional rulers, youths and women groups for their support.

“The Deputy Speaker reiterated his commitment to delivering more democratic dividends, promoting inclusive governance, and advancing policies that would improve the welfare and economic opportunities of the people of Bende,” the statement reads.
