Following this development, the state government is seeking the National Assembly’s approval for ratification as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

According to a document obtained by journalists in Bauchi, the Governor signed the legislation passed by the State House of Assembly on 28 October 2025, and the acting Deputy Clerk of the House, Musa Yerima, has submitted the proposal to the Committee on Constitution Review.

The letter, signed by the Deputy Clerk of the Bauchi State House of Assembly and addressed to Senator Barau Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, is dated 29 October 2025 and bears reference number BASHA/FIN/S/5/T. It is titled: “Forwarding of Bill.”

In the letter, he stated: “I am pleased to inform you that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill to provide for the creation of 29 new local government areas in Bauchi State, 2025.

“The additional local government areas listed in Schedule II of this law are inchoate until such time as the National Assembly passes an Act to make consequential provisions regarding the names of the said additional local government areas, as stipulated under Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This law is hereby forwarded to the Chairman of the Joint Committee on Constitution Review, National Assembly, for further necessary action.”

Yerima confirmed that the legislation has been passed in compliance with Sub-Section 3 of Section 100 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Currently, Bauchi State has 20 local government areas recognised by the 1999 Constitution; if the proposal for the additional 29 local government areas is ratified and approved by the National Assembly, the state will then have a total of 49 local government areas.
