Northern youths under the banner of the Northern Youths Concert Citizens (NYCC) have commended Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, for what they describe as a deliberate effort to reposition the country’s defence diplomacy.

In a statement signed by its Kaduna State Chairman, Dr Ibrahim Garba Birnin, the group said Matawalle’s actions mark a decisive shift towards a stronger, more secure and sovereign nation.

According to Birnin, the minister has moved beyond rhetoric by forging practical partnerships with key countries such as Turkey, China, Pakistan and the United States.

“These collaborations,” he noted, “have translated into real benefits — from new equipment and technology-transfer agreements to enhanced joint training programmes that boost the readiness of Nigeria’s armed forces.”

The youth group highlighted the acquisition of long-range patrol vessels as one of the minister’s most visible achievements. They said protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain is central to national prosperity, safeguarding oil and trade routes, fishing communities and deterring cross-border criminal networks.

According to him,”Coupled with increased training and technical support, these assets, they added, strengthen Nigeria’s layered defence posture across land, air and sea.

“Beyond military hardware, Matawalle’s strategy emphasises knowledge-sharing and sustainability.

” Technology-sharing deals and training programmes, the group stressed, lay the foundation for Nigeria to grow its own maintenance, shipbuilding and defence-support industries.

“Such efforts, they argued, will not only create jobs at home but also reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign suppliers, turning short-term gains into long-term national advantage.”

The NYCC said Matawalle’s commitment to strengthening defence diplomacy and building capacity reflects leadership that is focused on protecting the nation while preparing it for the future.
