Newcastle United defender Emil Krafth has addressed rumors suggesting a potential discord within the Swedish national team following Alexander Isak’s recent transfer to Liverpool.

Isak, who netted 27 goals in all competitions for Newcastle last season, joined Liverpool on transfer deadline day for a British record fee of £130 million. This move came after a period of uncertainty and a disagreement between Isak and Newcastle, as the 25-year-old expressed a desire to leave St James’ Park, while the club was initially reluctant to part ways with him. Ultimately, Isak secured his desired transfer and is expected to make his debut for the Reds after the international break.

Concerns arose about potential tension within the Swedish squad due to the presence of Newcastle players Krafth and Anthony Elanga. However, in an interview with Swedish newspaper Sportbladet, Krafth refuted claims of a division in the locker room.

“Many wanted to see Alex remain, but one must understand how football operates,” he stated. “I wish him all the best moving forward. Beyond being a footballer, Alex is a close friend to me.

“There were media reports suggesting the locker room would be split, but that is simply untrue. Footballers understand each other, and we can only wish him good fortune.

“As Anthony (Elanga) mentioned, the atmosphere has been very relaxed. No one has expressed any negative sentiments. These rumors seem to be fabricated. Everyone understands both his situation and that of the club. Naturally, they would have preferred to keep him; he is an exceptional player.”

Krafth shared that he maintained “constant” communication with Isak throughout a tumultuous summer, connecting via phone and in person. “It’s evident that he faced challenging times, but he is mentally resilient,” he remarked. “While it was undoubtedly hard for him, he managed to navigate through it.

“It’s a difficult situation, but one must try not to overanalyze it. You can empathize with both sides: the fans’ frustration at wanting to retain their best player and Alex’s desire to progress to the next level.”
