The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Senate to reinstate the suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The suspension stemmed from a series of events that unfolded when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan publicly challenged the Senate’s handling of various issues affecting her constituency, including calls for improved infrastructure and social services. Following her outspoken criticism, the Senate imposed a six-month suspension, citing breaches of decorum and procedure.

However, Justice Binta Nyako, in her judgement, described the suspension as “excessive” and unjustified. She pointed out that the measures taken against the senator were disproportionate to the alleged infractions. The court also found fault with the provisions of Chapter 8 of the Senate Standing Rules and section 14 of the Legislative Houses, Powers & Privileges Act, declaring both to be overreaching in their application.

In light of this ruling, the Senate is now mandated to reinstate Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, restoring her position and rights as an elected representative.
