Thousands of residents have fled their homes in Marte, Borno State, after Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists attacked a military base, killing four soldiers, sources reported on Monday.

The assault took place in New Marte, on the edge of the Lake Chad Basin, where heavily armed ISWAP fighters overwhelmed Nigerian troops in a fierce battle.

Witnesses said the terrorists seized control of the town, forcing residents to seek refuge in Dikwa, approximately 27 kilometres away.

“We slept in the bush, and many are still trapped,” one resident told Al Jazeera. “They’ve taken the military base and looted arms and ammunition.”

Another source confirmed the town’s capture, stating, “The terrorists have retaken New Marte. We are in serious trouble.”

The resurgence of ISWAP attacks has heightened fears among Borno State residents, despite efforts by Operation Hadin troops to curb the violence.

Local authorities have yet to comment on the situation, as displaced residents continue to grapple with the fallout of the attack.
