The forty seventh (47) inaugural lecture series of the Nasarawa State University Keffi, on “New Public Management, National Development and Transformation in a Globalized World” was delivered by prof. Charles Iwekeaku, of the department of public administration, made a case of a paradigm shift from the traditional public administration to new public management to promote National Development and sustainability of public service.

“It is in paradigm shift from traditional public administration to new public management where citizens are treated as critical customers or clients, whose loyalty and sustained patronage are desiderata for the existence and sustainability of the public service”.

According to Prof. Charles, New public management advocates new innovations, ideas, strategies and creativity in meeting the needs of members of the society, who should be seen as important and yearning for efficient and effective service delivery from the government, emphasizing the application of the concept of the private sector to achieve success in public offices.

He posited that the implication of the new public management is that the public policies, programmes and projects designed for national development should be in consonant with the New public management.

He maintained that personal merit, competence and a performance of people should determine their recruitment, placement and promotion into the public service without primordia considerations, such as ethnicity, nepotism, and religion among others.

The Vice Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University Keffi, prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, apart from appreciating the inaugural lecturer for doing justice to the topic, saying the management of the University under her stewardship has since implemented the new public management system into the administration of the institution which has yielded positive results.

In their goodwill messages, the representative of the Elder stateman, Chief Edwin Clark, and the Inegbese of Oligbo Kingdom, prof. Echefuna Rotimi Gabriel among others, called on the Nigerian government to implement the recommendations made by the inaugural lecturer for sustainable development and growth of the country just as the chairman, inaugural lecture series prof. James Jayeoba Olumuyiwa, commended the professors for keying into the program of inaugural lecture series calling on them to sustain the tempo.
