Rivers State: Pro-Wike Lawmakers Face Criticism

In a recent development, the actions of a factional Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have drawn strong condemnation from the People’s Congress, a prominent pro-democracy group. The group has expressed concern over the deliberate creation of chaos within the state by Martin Amaewhule and his followers and has urged law enforcement agencies to disregard their calls.

The pro-democracy group emphasizes that Martin Amaewhule and his followers are still grappling with bitterness after losing their membership in the Rivers State Assembly due to their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. The group points out that their political miscalculations were self-inflicted, as they were well aware of the constitutional provisions regarding lawmakers’ defection.

The group further asserts that the continuous vendetta and scheming against the government and people of Rivers State by Martin Amaewhule and his followers have become intolerable. They emphasize that playing politics at the expense of the state’s development is unacceptable.

The recent actions of these disgruntled former lawmakers, where they unlawfully called for the arrest of duly-constituted Caretaker Committee Chairmen and members in Rivers State, are deemed shameful. It is widely known that following the expiration of the tenure of the LG Chairmen, Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration established Caretaker Committees to oversee the affairs of the local governments until the next election, as any responsible government would do.

However, these former lawmakers, in their habitual pursuit of obstructing any progress made by the Fubara’s administration, shamelessly demanded the Nigeria Police to arrest the members of the duly-constituted Caretaker Committees.

The pro-democracy group categorizes their call as inciting anarchy and strongly urges the honorable officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agencies to dismiss the demands of these saboteurs pretending to be lawmakers. The group emphasizes that their intentions to destabilize Rivers State should be completely ignored, or preferably, they should be apprehended for their attempts to incite anarchy in the state.

It is crucial to prioritize the development and well-being of Rivers State over personal political vendettas, and the pro-democracy group is committed to ensuring that the state remains on a path of progress and stability.
