Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi recently faced a tumultuous episode resulting in its temporary closure.

This drastic measure was announced by Mr Zailani Bappa, the Director of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, during a press conference in Bauchi.

The closure ensued following a protest initiated by students in response to the alleged murder of Joseph Baidu, a 500 level Geology student, outside the campus premises on a fateful Saturday night.

This unsettling incident prompted an immediate response from the university administration.

Mr Bappa clarified that the unfortunate event occurred beyond the university grounds, emphasizing that the deceased student resided off-campus despite being in his final year.

The university’s security protocol was adhered to, as the matter was promptly reported to the police for thorough investigation.

Expressing regret over the disruption caused by the students’ agitation, Bappa highlighted the necessity of the closure.

The decision aimed to facilitate a comprehensive police investigation while restoring order within the university community.

With the school closure, students have been instructed to vacate all campuses immediately.

Any student found lingering on the premises will be subject to legal consequences, reinforcing the severity of the directive.

Bappa reiterated the management’s commitment to addressing and rectifying any form of disorder among students.

This commitment is integral to fostering a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
