In Abuja on Monday, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas championed the cause of increased citizens’ participation in the budget process during a one-day town hall meeting on the 2024 appropriation bill.

In a bid to revolutionize citizen involvement in budgeting, Abbas challenges all Government MDAs to follow the House’s lead.

Speaker Abbas announced the House’s commitment to reviewing the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) 2007, aiming to bolster provisions that enhance information accessibility and public consultation during the budget cycle.

The proposed amendment to the FRA will explicitly mandate and define public participation, ensuring a more transparent and inclusive budgeting process.

Highlighting the crucial role of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and development partners, Abbas emphasized their active participation in the town hall meeting as a testament to the democratic essence.

CSOs and development partners play a vital role in fostering democratic governance and active citizen engagement.

As President Bola Tinubu presented the 2024 budget to the National Assembly, Abbas called on representatives to scrutinize it meticulously, ensuring it reflects the needs and aspirations of every Nigerian amidst challenges such as soaring inflation.

The 2024 Appropriation Bill prioritizes national security, local job creation, and poverty reduction, earning the label ‘Budget of Renewed Hope.’

Abbas urged Nigerians to actively support the aspirations of the budget and provide constructive suggestions to strengthen proposals for better economic growth and development.

Nigerians are encouraged to actively contribute ideas on how the National Assembly can enhance the budget process to address the diverse needs of the populace.

Addressing Civil Society Organisations, Abbas called for contributions extending beyond mere criticism to constructive, evidence-based suggestions for improving the budget process.

CSOs are pivotal in shaping a more responsive and inclusive budgeting system that caters to the diverse needs of all Nigerians.

Speaker Abbas emphasized that the town hall meeting marked a significant step in changing the narrative, showcasing a firm commitment to enhancing public engagement and soliciting inputs into the budget process.

Greater citizens’ engagement requires collaborative efforts from both the legislative and executive branches of the government.
