In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the historic June 12 presidential election won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a significant event took place at his residence in Ikeja, Lagos.

The Coalition for a Better Nigeria, a coalition of pro-democracy groups, organized a gathering to celebrate the life and achievements of the renowned business mogul, as well as to honour the victims of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections.

A Gathering of Unity and Reflection

The occasion witnessed the presence of civil society organizations, scholars, students, and politicians from all corners of the country. Together, they paid tribute to the indelible impact of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and the importance of the June 12 election in Nigeria’s history.

A Call for Courageous Leadership and Fairness

During the event, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), delivered a thought-provoking speech. Representing Prince Tajudeen Olusi, the Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos State, Professor Akintola urged President Bola Tinubu to lead the nation with unwavering courage and ensure fairness in his interactions with various ethnic groups.

“The food is still being prepared in the kitchen, and it will be served appropriately. Nigerians must exercise patience and avoid unnecessary scramble,” he emphasized.

Furthermore, Professor Akintola called upon politicians to uphold their campaign promises and prioritize the well-being of the masses. He expressed concern over the prevailing hunger in the country and urged swift action to provide relief to those in need.

Restoring Nigerian Dignity and Meritocracy

Oba Mohood Olalekan Balogun, Ali Okunmade II, the Olubadan of Ibadan land, also shared his insights on the significance of June 12. Represented by Oloye Lekan Alabi, the Maye Olubadan of Ibadan land, the monarch appealed to President Tinubu to restore the dignity of Nigerians that was eroded during the colonial era. He stressed the importance of equal treatment for all citizens and emphasized the need for merit-based appointments in public service.

Oba Balogun drew inspiration from the legacies of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and MKO Abiola, both strong advocates of meritocracy. He quoted the words of Adegoke Adelabu’s 1952 book, ‘Africa in Revolution,’ in support of his call for fairness and equal opportunity.

Hope for a Better Future

Alhaji Olalekan Yushau Abiola, one of the sons of the late MKO and late Kudirat Abiola, expressed gratitude for the enduring democracy in Nigeria over the past two decades. He praised President Tinubu for his ongoing efforts in appointments and initiatives aimed at strengthening democracy in the country.

Comrade Awa Bamiji, the National Coordinator of the Coalition for a Better Nigeria, concluded the event by congratulating Nigerians on the recent presidential election held on February 25, 2023. He expressed optimism that Nigeria now has renewed hope to overcome the challenges of the past and create a brighter future.

The gathering marked the culmination of eight months of activities dedicated to honouring the memory of Chief Abiola, his family, and the victims of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history, it was unfortunately annulled by former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
