Speaking on the subject, Akunna said, “The administration doesn’t seem to have taken the census very seriously. Maybe we should research the past. In accordance with the constitution, the Shagari-led administration established the NPC in 1979.
We should be aware that Muhammadu Buhari suspended and disbanded the National Population Commission in 1983, not long after becoming president.
“Ibrahim Babangida was the one who reintroduced the NPC as a decree,” he said. The ruling is still in force as of right now. Buhari probably never intended for us to do a head count. The same Buhari has said that if he is troubled after May 29 he may leave for the Niger Republic.
