The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has characterised the fierce opposition from All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for a United Nations investigation into the Oyo school abduction as deeply suspect, asserting that only the guilty panic when the truth is pursued.

In a statement on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, argued that the frenetic reactions from top government officials and APC senators betrayed an underlying fear of exposure, rather than genuine concern for national sovereignty. He noted that such desperation to suppress scrutiny only fuels suspicion of complicity in high places.

Mr Yusuf dismissed claims that the governor’s request undermined Nigeria’s sovereignty, insisting instead that it reinforced global counter-terrorism collaboration—an international crime against humanity. Defending Mr Makinde’s unambiguous call for accountability, regardless of “office, influence, or affiliation,” the APM maintained that external scrutiny serves to bolster public confidence in domestic institutions, not erode them.

Drawing a sharp parallel, the party recalled President Bola Tinubu’s own overtures at the United Nations General Assembly and his June 2024 meeting with FBI officials, both of which actively sought foreign intelligence-sharing and aid. “If the President can pursue external collaboration, why the sudden hysteria over Governor Makinde doing the same?” the statement queried.

The APM further insinuated that the APC’s discomfort might be rooted in historical baggage, alluding to a former party leader’s confessed importation of terrorist elements as political mercenaries ahead of the 2015 elections. The party took aim at Senators Adams Oshiomhole and George Akume, urging them to champion the quest for truth rather than launch unwarranted attacks on the governor.

Reaffirming its unwavering support for Mr Makinde, the APM commended security agencies for their gallantry and professionalism in rescuing the abducted children, urging them to remain steadfast in their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s 200 million citizens.
