The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has formally called for a United Nations-led investigation into the rescue of the abducted Oyo 44, asserting that an impartial inquiry is the only way to exonerate Governor Seyi Makinde from baseless complicity allegations.

In a statement on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, argued that the probe is crucial to counter the politicisation of the tragic incident and dispel misinformation propagated by political adversaries, notably former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Yusuf defended Makinde’s unblemished seven-year security tenure, underscoring his pioneering role in establishing the South-West security outfit, Amotekun. He insisted that a UN-led investigation would ensure transparency, free from political interference, and serve as a blueprint for handling future emergencies while quashing all lingering insinuations.

Taking a swipe at Fayose, whom he accused of treating political provocation as a mercantile trade, Yusuf warned that such incendiary statements could inflame tensions across the region. He cited Fayose’s recent false alarm about an alleged plot to dethrone the newly installed Olubadan, urging him to cease his unfounded and dangerous speculations.

Highlighting the administration’s achievements, Yusuf noted the seamless installation of the Soun of Ogbomosho, the Alafin of Oyo, and the Olubadan of Ibadan—a feat accomplished without the internal acrimony witnessed in other states, such as the protracted Awujale succession crisis in Ijebuland. He finally enjoined the Tinubu-led Federal Government to back the UN proposal, describing it as a pragmatic panacea for Nigeria’s escalating security dilemmas.
